CUSF announces its 2026 Super Star Award for Unit 4 and District 116 support staff and paraprofessionals. Our schools would simply not run as effectively or efficiently without the many supporting talents and expertise of these essential staff members. From multilingual teaching aides, student support advocates, office managers, food service assistants, hall monitors, nurses, bus drivers, student engagement advocates, and custodial workers, these individuals help build relationships with students’ and staff which are often the “secret sauce,” for successful schools.
Below are the ten 2026 Super Star individuals selected to receive a $250 thank you award from CUSF for their positive contributions to the 2025-26 school year.

Mara Craft
Jefferson
Mara, a longtime teacher’s aide at Jefferson Middle School, is known for her unwavering dedication, compassion, and ability to make every student feel like family. For more than 20 years, she has gone above and beyond to support students, building meaningful relationships that extend far beyond the classroom. Whether adapting to new roles, stepping into challenging situations, or simply remembering the small details that matter most to students, Mara’s impact is both profound and lasting. As colleague, Yulia Cook, shared, “She treats the kids like family, and that is what makes her so special!”

Stephanie Cahoon
Centennial
Stephanie Cahoon, library clerk at Centennial High School, is a constant source of warmth, encouragement, and connection for students and staff alike. Through her welcoming presence, thoughtful support, and genuine interest in every student who walks through the doors, she has transformed the library into a place where students feel seen, valued, and inspired. Whether recommending books, offering advice, or simply brightening someone’s day, Stephanie creates a sense of belonging that keeps students coming back. One of her many positive student reviews states, “With Ms. Cahoon, the Centennial Library has become a place where people discover new interests and cultivate the ones they already have.”

Shawn Derby
Barkstall
Shawn Derby is an exceptional teaching assistant whose energy, creativity, and genuine care make a lasting impact on students each day. Known for meeting students where they are, he builds strong, supportive relationships that foster engagement and curiosity. Whether getting on the floor to work with students eye to eye, bringing lessons to life through his own research or creating inclusive opportunities as a basketball coach, Shawn ensures every student feels valued and involved. According to nominator, Katherine Krusell, “Shawn’s commitment to making both learning and extracurricular activities meaningful and inclusive highlights his extraordinary dedication to our students.”

Jonathan Skibar
Barkstall
Jon Skibar, head custodian at Barkstall Elementary, brings heart, humor, and an extraordinary sense of connection to his role, making him a beloved presence in the school community. From playful whiteboard drawings and hidden superhero surprises to engaging with students in the lunchroom, Jon creates moments of joy while building meaningful relationships. Beyond the fun, he is a dependable and responsive support to staff, always ready to help wherever needed. As one colleague shared, “Mr. Skibar’s warmth, humor, and genuine care for students make him a beloved member of our school community.”

Brian Washington
Champaign Young Adult Program
Brian is a dedicated bus driver whose positivity, kindness, and genuine care create a welcoming environment for every student and adult he encounters. With a constant smile and encouraging words, he sets the tone for a safe and supportive ride, treating each student with respect, dignity, and even a bit of humor. His reliability and commitment to going the extra mile make a lasting impact on the entire school community. As Mindy Borden, occupational therapist shared, “Brian consistently brings a positive attitude and a smile to his job and creates a welcoming environment for anyone who steps on his bus.”

Erika Ubaldo

Erika, a bilingual school secretary, is the heart of her front office, known for her warmth, compassion, and ability to make every student and family feel welcomed and valued. With a caring, motherly presence, she builds strong relationships that foster trust and connection throughout the school community. Erika also plays a vital role in supporting family well-being, proactively identifying needs and helping ensure timely support for those facing challenges. Annadel Melendez, the school social worker states, “Her deep understanding of our school community, combined with her compassion and dedication, makes her an invaluable asset.”

UMS
Q Clemmons, Student Relations Supervisor at Urbana Middle School, is a positive and impactful presence who consistently goes above and beyond to support students and staff. Through restorative conversations, small group work, and strong relationship-building, he helps students grow socially and emotionally while fostering a supportive school environment. Beyond the classroom, he dedicates his time to coaching and creating opportunities like organized recess games for students to stay active and connected. Nominated by Emily Shuddarth, she shared, “His positive presence makes a lasting difference in our school community.”

Elizabeth Chinn
King
Elizabeth Chin is an exceptional Special Education Teaching Assistant whose dedication, presence, and care make a powerful impact on students every day. Known for meeting students at their level, she supports learning with both structure and warmth, embodying the true spirit of a “warm demander.” Her willingness to help any student, combined with her reliability and strong work ethic, makes her an invaluable member of the school community. Her nominator and principal of the school stated, “Students feel supported, respected, and truly cared for by her every day.”

Jamie Perry
UHS
Jamie is a dedicated member of the UHS community whose commitment to students never wavers. She works tirelessly to support students and teachers, serving as a strong advocate while consistently putting students with special needs first. Even after overcoming significant injuries, Jamie returned with the same determination and care. Chris Luffman shared, “She works hard for our students, our teachers, and advocates for students every day.”
