CUSF Annual Kick-Off Breakfast

On September 2, we welcomed educators, students, partners, and supporters to the I Hotel & Conference Center for our annual CUSF Kick‑Off Breakfast. It was a morning filled with music, storytelling, and celebration. By 9 AM, guests had already eaten, laughed, reflected, and heard firsthand how community partnerships and innovative teaching are transforming classrooms across Champaign‑Urbana.

The program was guided by emcee Yavonnda Smith, whose energy set the tone for an engaging event. Attendees heard from several grant recipients, including Daneya Carter and Danielle Mallet, who shared how CUSF grants helped teach students about finances. Jim Wood and Erin Claxon highlighted the impact of grant‑funded projects in their classrooms, demonstrating how music opens doors to meaningful experiences with community support.

Champaign Central Social Studies Teacher Katie Flugge and student Jaydon Sibley offered a look into Webber & Thies’ Adopt‑A‑School “professional boot camp,” a hands‑on partnership preparing students interested in law with  real‑world learning. Urbana High School’s Nathan Westerman and Matt Kelly of A&R Mechanical showcased their collaboration, including an Industrial Technology field trip that connected students directly with industry professionals.

A highlight of the morning was hearing from the winner of the Mann‑Hankel Award, honoring an educator who exemplifies excellence in teaching, leadership, and service. This year’s recipient, Franklin STEAM Academy librarian, Kayla Leitschuh, was celebrated for her outstanding commitment to students and her school community.

We were also honored to hear from both district superintendents…Dr. Jennifer Ivory‑Tatum, speaking in her final year with District 116, and Dr. Geovanny Ponce, offering reflections in his first year with Unit 4. Their remarks really touched on how Champaign‑Urbana shows up for its schools, and our educators show up for their students.
