When we invest in educators and students by supporting creativity and innovation – excellence in Champaign and Urbana public schools is the result.
In spring of 2024, during CUSF’s strategic planning process, the board listened carefully to teacher feedback. One theme rose to the top: the fall grant cycle can feel rushed. At the start of a new school year, teachers are building classroom culture, assessing student needs, and simply finding their rhythm. Many shared that they don’t yet know what tools, projects, or experiences will make the biggest impact — or they don’t have the time to craft a strong proposal so early in the year.
In response, CU Schools Foundation launched a second Spring Grant cycle.
Now in its second year, this additional opportunity has already proven to be a tremendous success.
The spring cycle has allowed us to:
-
Award grants to teachers who did not receive funding in the fall
-
Support meaningful second-semester projects, classroom tools, and field trips
-
Provide teachers the chance to strengthen and resubmit proposals
-
Extend grace and encouragement as educators grow in communicating their ideas
Teacher feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Many have shared how much they appreciate a second opportunity, not just for funding – but for learning. Being able to refine a proposal, clarify their vision, and try again has helped teachers feel supported rather than discouraged. They feel seen. They feel heard. They feel backed by their community.
This second cycle is made possible by the generosity of our Community Partners and dedicated 365 Club members. Their investment ensures that great ideas don’t expire simply because of timing.
An added benefit of the spring round has been the real-time insight it provides into classroom needs across Champaign and Urbana. When a request cannot be funded through CUSF for one reason or another, we are often able to share those needs through our On-Call Teacher Allies Wishlist — where community members frequently step in to help. We’ve seen this generosity in action, including a particularly meaningful partnership supporting the FLS program at Edison Middle School.
Ultimately, the second Spring Grant cycle allows CUSF to be stronger allies, advocates, and ambassadors for our public schools. It reflects our commitment to listening, adapting, and responding with action.
We are deeply grateful to every donor, partner, and supporter who makes this possible. Together, we are equipping teachers, empowering students, and strengthening our community.
