Meet our board:
J. Steven Beckett
When you ask Steve Beckett why public education is important he chuckles and says, “Without C-U’s great public schools, I’d probably be digging a ditch somewhere. My experience with public education in this community has been tremendous!”
An Urbana native, Steve attended Lincoln, Thornburn, Urbana Jr. High, and Urbana High School and found teachers in every building who inspired and motivated him. When asked to elaborate, Steve recites a long list of teachers who maintained high standards, made him toe the line and kept him going.
In addition to being an attorney and law professor, Steve has always been active in community organizations and local government. He believes the Champaign Urbana Schools Foundation is a good fit and looks forward to serving as a Board Member.
J. Steven Beckett has practiced law in Champaign-Urbana since 1973 and is currently of counsel to the Urbana firm, Beckett & Webber, P.C. His primary focus is litigation and appeals, both criminal and civil, and he appeared in the United States Supreme Court on two occasions. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law and has been on the faculty of the College of Law since 1987.
