Angela Wyatt Prairie Elementary Dance and Drama Teacher

Angela Wyatt teaches Dance and Drama at Urbana’s Prairie Elementary School. Students in Urbana receive 6 weeks of Drama and 6 weeks of Dance as part of the regular curriculum. During her first year, Prairie principal Yavonnda Smith and she were discussing options for program growth and it was shortly afterward that she located several pairs of tap shoes in storage within the district.  At their next meeting Angela suggested that she teach tap dance.

Ms. Smith revealed she had been a dance student for many years, and a tap dancer herself.  They both agreed that it teaches self control, discipline, coordination, and is a self esteem building tool.  Sadly there were not enough tap shoes in enough different sizes for all of the children. That’s when Ms. Wyatt decided to apply for a Splash Grant; she received enough money to purchase two dozen additional pairs of tap shoes.

“We were so excited to receive the Splash Grant for the tap shoe purchase.  Each year we have the need for more shoes. This fall the 1st grade will present a mini-musical and it will feature tap dancing learned during the first 6 weeks of school.  We look forward to using our new shoes during this production, and would like to thank all of the sponsors for giving us the opportunity to each have a pair of tap shoes to wear.”

Bryan Foli - Edison Middle School "Microscopes, Electrodes and High Pressure Gas"

Because of your partnership with the CU Schools Foundation children at Edison Middle School are using microscopes to investigate cells, and a world of unseen living things. Students are learning to calculate the real size of objects on their slides, the field of view, and ways to observe mobile microscopic organisms. We have implemented many new microscope laboratory activities from Flinn Scientific Company.

We didn’t stop there. We were also able to enhance our inquiry into electricity with new circuit building kits, and shocking demonstrations of runaway amounts of static electricity.

We added 15 new lab based investigations into the properties of air pressure, water pressure and density. Thanks again for the difference you are making in the lives of students!

Jaime Williams - 2nd Grade Teacher from Prairie Elementary

Jaime Williams teaches second graders at Prairie Elementary School in Urbana.  With her Splash Grant money she was able purchase a large brightly colored classroom carpet.  The carpet has 30 large brightly colored squares so that there is plenty of space for each student.  The students sit on the carpet when they work on phonics, math and calendar activities.  Jaime really loves the fact that when she is reading aloud to her students they now spend less time bothering each other and more time listening to the stories she is reading.

Michael Martin - UHS Agriculture Teacher

Michael Martin teaches Industrial Arts at Urbana High School.  He has had several classes participating in a project called "Urbana Prairie Garden".  The garden serves the UHS agriculture students as well as the Urbana community.  The retaining wall project has allowed over 30 students to participate in a hands on landscaping project while at the same time preserving the soil which will enable the garden to be utilized by more students and community members in the future.  An added benefit is the curb appeal that the retaining wall and prairie garden has brought to that corner of the High School grounds.  The following is an update from Mr. Martin:

I just wanted to update CUSF about the progress we have made in the Prairie Garden that CUSF help make possible for us to build.  The garden has progressed very well and the retaining wall that we bought through the Splash Grant you sponsored looks awesome.  In addition to the wall we added grasses and flowers.  Here are some pictures of what we have been doing.  My Advanced Construction Class builds the walls and the Environmental Science Class plants the different grasses and flowers.  Thanks again!
